Gene Hackman’s family believes carbon monoxide poisoning may have been the cause of his tragic death, according to his daughter, Elizabeth Jean Hackman.

In an exclusive statement to TMZ, Elizabeth Jean Hackman shared that the family suspects carbon monoxide poisoning may have been involved. The family’s home, where they had lived since 2004, is reported to be a modern property, having been built in 2000. However, it remains unclear if there were any issues with the home’s gas system, such as leaks or prior service calls.
Gene Hackman, who retired from acting years ago, had been living a quieter life with Betsy, pursuing his passions for writing and painting. Elizabeth did not provide any updates on her father’s health, but it was noted that in March of the previous year, Gene was seen walking with a cane and leaning on Betsy for support.
Gene Hackman and his wife’s bodies were discovered on February 26, 2025, after a neighbor called police to conduct a welfare check. Authorities responded to the couple's $3.8 million mansion at around 1:45 p.m. It took 12 hours for formal identification to be completed, with the announcement of their deaths occurring just after midnight on Thursday. The official cause of death is still under investigation.
According to the Santa Fe New Mexican, Police spokesman Mendoza stated, “We are currently in the early stages of a death investigation and are awaiting approval for a search warrant. At this time, we do not suspect foul play. Both Gene Hackman and his wife were found deceased in their home on Sunset Trail. I want to reassure the community that there is no immediate danger to anyone."
As of now, no details regarding funeral arrangements have been disclosed.
